Our Humble Beginnings

Meet Buddy

Robert Utley, affectionately known as Buddy, was a respected heavy equipment mechanic well known in Jackson, TN, for tractor repair. Born in 1936, he learned basic mechanic skills from his uncle, Brownie Roberts, which sparked his interest in automotive repair.

As a young man, Buddy worked in the cotton fields to support his growing family while also repairing cars on the side. As he got older, his interest in mechanics grew, and he was hired as a heavy equipment mechanic at Murphy Tractor in the early 1970s. He later worked for Lisle Brothers & Son, who invested in furthering his education in heavy equipment maintenance.

Buddy mastered clever techniques for solving engine problems and passed this expertise, along with his tools, to his son, Michael Utley. Today, his grandson, Robert Utley—better known as Mickey—uses the very tools his grandfather once did. The name "Buddy" in Buddy's Auto serves as a memorial to the enduring legacy of Robert Utley (1936-1994).

Our Focus

Proverbs 11:1

"The Lord detests the use of dishonest scales, but He delights in accurate weights".

This verse is why we prioritize accurate diagnostics. We believe that customers should only pay for what is truly wrong with their vehicles. If our diagnosis proves incorrect, we won’t charge for any parts that were installed. This is our way of standing against dishonesty in the industry.

The Diagnostic Process

Many drivers mistakenly believe that a trouble code provides a precise diagnosis for their vehicle issues, often questioning the need for a diagnostic fee since the scanner seems to offer a quick solution. However, diagnosing automotive problems is more complex.

The vehicle's computer monitors various sensors, and when one detects an abnormal reading, it triggers a trouble code and turns on the Check Engine light. This code indicates which engine parameter is out of range but does not reveal the root cause. Further investigation is necessary to identify the underlying issue.

This is where automotive diagnosticians come in. These specialized technicians use advanced diagnostic tools to assess critical systems, including the engine, transmission, brakes, and electrical components. Their expertise allows them to pinpoint issues that may not be immediately apparent, saving time and money by ensuring that repairs address the correct problems.

In summary, a thorough diagnostic process is essential for effective vehicle repair, underscoring the importance of skilled diagnosticians in delivering reliable service.
